Administering Medication in School
At Elangeni, we are able to administer essential medication during the school day. We can only do this with your permission, which must be provided on the official medication form. This form can be downloaded below or found in the forms section of our website.
However, there are strict rules set by the local authority about what we are permitted to administer:
Medication We Cannot Administer
-
Ibuprofen or Aspirin:
We are not allowed to administer any medication containing Ibuprofen or Aspirin unless it has been prescribed by a doctor. In these cases, the pharmacist’s dispensing label must be clear and legible on the bottle. -
Antibiotics:
We cannot administer antibiotics unless they have been prescribed to be taken four times a day. -
Any medication without the correct form:
We cannot give your child any medication unless you have completed the correct form and handed it to a member of the admin team. This includes lotions, creams, over‑the‑counter remedies, cough sweets, throat lozenges, and similar items. Admin staff may ask additional questions before agreeing to administer anything on your behalf. -
Medication without original packaging:
All medication must come in its original box with the instruction leaflet included. This applies to all medicines, including asthma inhalers. If an inhaler is provided without its box, you will need to obtain a replacement from your GP. It is your responsibility to ensure we receive medication clearly showing it has been prescribed for your child. -
Medication to control a temperature:
We will not administer medication intended to reduce a fever. If your child requires temperature‑reducing medication in the morning, they are not well enough to attend school.
Our Approach
While we are not obliged to administer medication, we will usually do our best to support families—particularly where it would be difficult for a parent to come into school during the day. However, we reserve the right to refuse if the local authority’s guidelines are not met.
If we cannot administer the medication, you are welcome to come to school at the appropriate time and give it to your child yourself (with the exception of medication used to bring down a temperature).
